Back in December 2016, before we moved to the new studio, I challenged five of my students that they would not be able to get the full side splits before my birthday at the end of April 2017.

The challenge was 100 "Black Belts" (a killer full body exercise that is a burpee with a press up and tuck jump added) for the student if they did not achieve the splits.  However, if they did hit the side splits the exercise penalty passed to me for all of the five sudents!

At the end of the agreed time it was only sisters, Samantha (rear) and Melissa (front) from the group of five that did achieve their side splits and gifted me 200 Black Belts.  The remaining three students varied in their improved of flexibility range but did not quite achieve their goal.  All three student have each completed their 100 Black Belts penalty and I have offered to retake the challenge.

The beauty of this challenge is that it is a three way win.

  1. Student achieves splits = win
  2. Student doesn't quite achieve splits but improves flexibility = win
  3. Instructor is connecting with student and has fitness training opportunity = win

Students involved are motivated by the "the carrot"  or opportunity to get me to do the penalty exercise and so are more likely to stretch regularly.  This indirect coaching often works better than "the stick" method of preaching that all students should be stretching at home.

In this fast paced modern life goal setting is a valuable life skill and so important to understanding what is important to us and staying focussed on that and avoid distractions.  In the end there are many ways to motivate ourselves to meet a challenge but there is one real truth.  Without the perserverance to keep on going, even when you don't feel like it, you will never reach your goal if you stop.
