A Reflection On 2018

Monday, 24 December 2018

We have had a great year at Fife Kickboxing!!!

So much has happened this year and I wanted to take a few minutes to reflect and say thank you to the members, the instructors, the coaches and staff for what has been just a brilliant 12 months.

I really enjoy this time of year.  I know some people do not find this time enjoyable or easy for many reasons, but I find it to be a time where the pace of life eventually settles to something that I can keep up with and find time to reflect and find gratitude for what I have.

  1. A great team!  From the Lead Instructors to the SWAT Team we have great people.  The instructors dedicate a lot of their personal time in preparing class plans and jobs that I ask them to do behind the scenes.  We created the SWAT Team this year and they have been an incredible success.  Through this programme we have amazing support in the class and these young leaders gain fantastic knowledge and experience in a team.

  2. Warriors!  Sensei David offered his help with developing the fight team and has grabbed the job with both hands.  He’s implemented a rigorous training schedule, a team identity and uniform.  Above all else though he’s gotten results.  Our fighters are undoubtedly in the best form they’ve ever been.

  3. Ladies Only Classes!  When Senseis Lorna & Morag suggested that we start a Ladies Only class I must admit that I was doubtful.  It has turned out to be one of the best decisions of the year.  The Ladies are great fun and they have developed some serious skills through the year.  This class will grow from strength to strength as the Ladies share their success stories.

  4. Updated Kids Belt System!  This year we introduced the kids belt tag system as a way of recognising and rewarding the kids for mini learning goals.  It’s still developing and growing organically, and we have a way to go to make it perfect, but it has been a success with the kids and the instructors.

  5. Niki!  This lady has been an amazing addition to the team.  She has brought order to chaos at the front desk and done it all with a smile!  Not only has she been a great source of support to the instructor team, but she has brought a level of customer service to the club that just didn’t exist before.

  6. Kids Classes!  We took a bold step at the start of the year and changed the kids timetable so that it was skills based, rather than age based.  This allowed us to focus and support the higher-grade kids with the coaching they deserve and as a result our student retention in the higher grades has rocketed.  The senior grade kids have invested so much time in their training that we needed to ensure that we gave them the support they deserved.

  7. Champions for Life!  Martial Arts is more than just punching and kicking.  There is a culture of respect, discipline, excellence and resilience woven into all martial arts and we wanted to offer the kids a learning opportunity that developed character in a structured way that rewarded.  The Champions for Life programme was added to the kids classes late in the year and the interest and participation was incredible with over 30 kids enrolled in the first Life Skill – Respect.  This programme can positively influence our young club members and we are proud to be able to offer this fantastic programme to the kids free of charge.

  8. To finish off the year we made a job offer to Sensei Morag to join the instructor team full time.  Morag has been a student and instructor with the club for more than 15 years and during that time she has been a constant, trusted and respected colleague and friend.  As the club continues to grow and evolve, we need extra staff and help not only on the mats but behind the scenes.  Morag has an unquestionable skill working with children and with her working full time we can offer the kids an incredible coaching experience in all our classes along with the potential to offer more diverse training opportunities.

Lastly and most importantly, we must acknowledge and thank you!  The club is nothing without our members.  We work hard to create a fun, friendly and family-orientated atmosphere and we really draw to us the most fantastic people.  You are the reason we created the club and I hope we do you service in all that we do.  Thank you for your loyalty; your trust; and your friendship throughout the year.  2018 was great, but 2019 promises to be incredible!!

Merry Christmas and Best Wishes!
