The competition circuit can be a long day so it's important to stay chilled and stay rested ready for the fights rather than pacing the floor. We have a expert in this learned skill... 2010 WKA Boys +70kg Semi-Contact Scottish Champion Ryan Bignell!!!!
Ryan also place third in the light continuous category. Lorna fought in the Ladies semi-contact category and got a third place after a good fight with a tae kwon do student with rapid fire kicks.
The two more senior fighters of the day - Derek and myself - had a bit of fun in the veterans category though neither of us fought well enough to merit a trophy.
Now is the time to build the competition squad to an elite half dozen or so. Four fighters this time so we aim to take one more fighter to the next competition!!
Parkour has always fascinated me.Asides from the incredible level of physical skill what comes across with clarity is Daniel ILabaca’s message. This belief can be transferred to all areas of life whether it be sports, business or learning.I choose not to fall...
Thank you to Ger for un-earthing this interesting article by Mick Coup about intimidation by "bad guys" and the format that preparing for a street fight should take...
------------
As I've written previously, in my opinion 'exposure' is the only way to address this issue, and unfortunately the 'bad guys' tend to have more of it than the 'good guys' by virtue of the environment they exist within.
In training I try and hit people on a physical, mental and emotional level wherever possible - I make the sessions physically hard, I demand that people take responsibility for actively learning, and I induce an emotional level of stress as innoculation via various means...
It seems inconceivable that “normal” people should stand by and watch a 15-year-old girl be gang raped and beaten, but that’s just what happened as described in the news report below.
By understanding the circumstances in which the public act like sheep and cumulatively allow an act like this to be perpetrated we might all take a look at ourselves and make the promise to be the “black sheep” in these situations and act by dialling 999.
It's chilling to consider waking up and finding someone at your bedside but isn't it great to hear a positive story about this women having the spirit and determination to fight off her attacker...

Charles, Craig, Gary and Paul would like to thank Ger O'Dea for the excellent training experience at the recent seminar with Dynamis Gym Edinburgh. The Personal Defence Readiness Workshop :: Defending against the Knife seminar was insightful and descriptive of the true experience of being atacked or threatened with a knife.
The seminar covered protection stategies when the scenario involves a knife or other edged weapon. Using fundamental S.P.E.A.R. SYSTEM™ training methodologies, the aim of the seminar being to improve clarity, competence and confidence in facing the threat of a knife or edged weapon in a confrontation.
Topics covered during the session:
understand the mindset of an opponent who uses a knife
explore the types of scenario you may be in where a knife could likely be used
analyse how a knife is introduced and used in common scenarios
recognise and identify pre-contact cues which will improve perception speed
explore congruent body language to optimally manage distance and timing
experience the mobile geometry of dynamic confrontations involving a knife
try and test control tactics with a bad-guy role player who is actively resisting
There is an exciting process of development ongoing in the self defence skills taught at the self defence classes. Charles and Craig are heading to Virginia Beach in the U.S. in October to train with Tony Blauer and his team on the PDR Instructor Certification training. This is an exciting addition to the core self defence skills we teach every week at class.
The UK’s Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), which is responsible for establishing training standards across the country, approved the S.P.E.A.R. System™ for inclusion in their new Manual of Guidance for Personal Safety Training for the Police Officer.

I’m sure that I speak for everyone at the classes in wishing Lorna and Adrian the very best wishes and congratulations for their Wedding Day this coming Saturday.
The grading today was a tough session for all the students. Everyone battled through in spite of a couple of minor knocks and the instructors were delighted with the overall standard of the syllabus work and the attitude displayed throughout the grading.
